Montresor Seeks Revenge
The story “The Cask of Amontillado is written by Edgar Allen Poe.” The genre is horror fiction and short story. It tells the story of Montresor’s revenge on Fortunato. Montresor feels that Fortunato has insulted him, and he puts a plan in place to seek revenge.
Fortunato insults Montresor. So Montresor is waiting to get his revenge. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when we ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” That explains my answer because it shows how he has tolerated all the injuries but he could not stand an insult. He wanted revenge. (Author Edgar Allen Poe Pg 1)
This is when Montresor tricks Fortunato to come down into his basement. “My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted.” This shows Montresor tricked Fortunato by making him eager to go down into the basement. Montresor questions Fortunato’s capability of making the journey, knowing that Fortunato’s pride will keep him going onward. (Author Edgar Allen Poe Pg 21)
This is where his true character is displayed. His plan to kill Fortunato succeeded. “For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In pace requiescat!” The author states this because he is showing that Montresor came through with his promise and got his revenge on Fortunato. (Author Edgar Allen Poe Pg 59)
Montresor feels Fortunato has insulted him. So Montresor sets a plan to get his revenge. He tricks Fortunato into coming down into his basement, when they get down their Montresor sticks to the plan and suffocates Fortunato into the wall. Unfortunately, a similar theme has played out in school shootings where the school shooters felty bullied and created a plan for revenge. You should be cautious of how other people view your words and actions.
